CALLING ALL MAKERS!
The Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center is seeking makers to participate in the Design Challenge during its West Virginia Makes Festival on Friday, Nov. 8, 2024. We want to recognize and reward ingenuity, creativity as well as the diverse skills and talents of makers throughout the region!
What qualifies as a Design Challenge entry?
Because we are celebrating creativity and ingenuity in all form, there are no set guidelines about what qualifies as a Design Challenge entry. We welcome a diversity of creations.
In past years, entries have included everything from electronic devices, electric motorcycles, paintings and sculptures, costumes, a mechatronic dinosaur, phone and computer apps, Steampunk metal lamps and robots, a fiber optic switching system, mine-safety devices, web-based games, innovative ice cream scoops, a retractable phone holder, fishing lures, solar-powered lighted basketball hoops, medical devices, rockets – even pet desserts.
Entries need not be physical objects. Original audio and video productions as well as performance art entries are welcome.
May I enter the Design Challenge and sell my creations as well?
Yes, but keep in mind that you must be available to speak with our judges when they visit your display. Time constraints will not allow judges to revisit your table.
Must I be a West Virginia resident to enter the Design Challenge?
No, we welcome makers from across the region. Past Design Challengers – and winners – have hailed from beyond the borders of the Mountain State.
How will my entry be judged?
A panel of judges will visit your table during the Makes Festival to evaluate your entry and ask questions. Judging will be based on creativity, originality, presentation and how well you explain your creation.
What are the prize amounts?
Adult: First place – $3,000; second place – $1,000; third place – $500
Youth: First place – $500; second place – $250; third place – $125
When will I receive my prize?
All winners will receive trophies during the festival’s afternoon awards ceremony. Monetary prizes will come later in the form of a check from the Marshall University Research Corporation. Winners must complete and return a W-9 form before funds can be released.
