Industry-ready students recognized for achievements

In its continuing commitment to developing skilled industrial workforce participants, Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC) has graduated additional classes of students from its Career Skills programs that prepare machinists, welders and industrial maintenance technicians for in-demand jobs.

Several members of the graduating class already have accepted employment offers.

Fifteen individuals representing six West Virginia counties and one in Ohio just completed hands-on machinist technology and welding technology courses at MAMC. The MAMC programs are in partnership with Mountwest Community & Technical College (MCTC), so students also can earn a career-enhancing college degree in addition to industry-recognized technical skill sets and professional credentials.

Three members of the class earned associate of applied of science degrees, while others are still working to complete their degrees. The machinist graduates with degrees are Owen Friend of Charleston, Shannon Jordan of Huntington and Devin Null of Hurricane.

Machinist class members who successfully completed their initial semesters of MCTC-certificate and MAMC-credential coursework are Gavin Allen of Inwood; Cade Beever of Huntington; William Hunt of Point Pleasant, Caleb Benwell of Hurricane, Caleb Benwell of Branchland; Jameson Hampton of Huntington; Ryan Martin of Chesapeake, Ohio; Corey Nahodil of Huntington; and Cadance Young of Huntington.

The welding graduates, each of whom earned an associate degree from MCTC in addition to individual certificates and industry certifications, are Jonathan Caroll of Lavalette, Brittany Carter of Huntington, Donald Lord of Huntington, and Kelvy Varney of Glenwood.

Students were recognized Dec. 12 at MAMC Huntington during a luncheon sponsored by Nucor Steel West Virginia, demonstrating the advanced steelmaker’s strong commitment to workforce education and training.

To meet industry demand for skilled workers, MAMC expanded its machinist technology program to South Charleston in August in partnership with BridgeValley Community and Technical College and launched SMART (Systems Maintenance, Automation and Robotics Technology) in partnership with Mountwest. SMART classes are offered at MAMC Huntington and at the Marshall University Mid-Ohio Valley Center in Point Pleasant.

New classes for all locations of MAMC’s machinist, welding and SMART programs begin in January. For more information, visit   or contact Jill Goheen at or 304-781-1678.
