New fiber laser takes cutting power to the next level

The latest addition to MAMC’s trove of technology is the first fiber laser of its kind in central Appalachia: a 3,000-watt Amada Brevis 1212 AJ, which replaces the most heavily used piece of equipment in the Huntington advanced manufacturing center, an Amada CO2 laser. Fiber laser technology elevates cutting power to a whole new level.

For example, the new laser can cut metal at speeds up to six times faster than a CO2 laser as well as slice through thicker materials. And because the new laser’s beam is more concentrated, it can shape smaller, more intricate details than the older laser. But these attributes are not the only advantages.

Unlike the old CO2 laser, the new fiber Amada can cut metals that include brass and copper, whose reflectivity makes them unsuitable for and potentially harmful to older CO2 lasers. Perhaps the biggest advantage is that the fiber laser doesn’t only cut sheet metal. With a flexible Z-axis, the fiber laser can cut more complex 3-dimensional, pre-formed parts. Take, for example, an electrical junction box, which can be manufactured then placed into the laser for post processing to cut holes or other precise shapes in the enclosure.

“Manufacturers from across the region have been utilizing our laser technology for years, producing everything from decorative signs, aircraft engine components and brackets to mining equipment, automotive components and even holiday decorations,” said MAMC Director Derek Scarbro. “This new, more versatile laser is going to open new doors and new opportunities for these businesses and others, providing more flexibility, power and cutting options.”

Installation of the Amada fiber laser was completed last week and more than a half dozen manufacturers already are scheduled to lease time on the new technology, according to Brian Brown, senior manufacturing engineering and Huntington site manager.
