The Marshall University Advanced Manufacturing Center (formerly RCBI) is expanding the hours of its community makerspace beginning in May. The Maker Vault will remain open until 7 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday to provide more flexibility for professionals who work late and children who need to wait for their parents to take them to the makerspace after work.
The Maker Vault currently operates Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The center also plans to open the makerspace two Saturdays each month beginning in June. Details are still being finalized with plans to announce specific dates and times in the coming weeks.
“I know several individuals who consistently utilize the makerspace, but I would like the number of users and makers we serve to grow exponentially, ” said Kara Mullins, the center’s makerspace and STEM coordinator. Mullins said she hopes that the expanded hours will appeal to additional makers interested in taking advantage of the high-end professional tools and technology available.
The Maker Vault, West Virginia’s largest makerspace, has been serving the community since May 2016. It originally occupied a former bank vault, a holdover from earlier years when the center’s Huntington facility served as a financial institution. Today, the makerspace includes not only the vault but has expanded to two other large spaces inside the Huntington center. It is equipped with multiple 3D printers, laser cutters, vacuum formers, soldering equipment, vinyl cutter, router and various woodworking and other hand tools.
Standard monthly memberships start at $25. For those unfamiliar with its technology or how to use it properly, The center offers assisted-level memberships for $40 per month.
“People of all ages and skill levels use the makerspace to create and bring their ideas to life. We encourage everyone to join in the making,” Mullins said. “If you think you might be interested in a membership or are just curious about the makerspace, contact me to arrange a tour.”
