STEM@Home: Paper Rollercoaster Engineering!

As featured on WSAZ’s First Look at Four, RCBI’s Makerspace/STEM Coordinator, Kara Mullins, and Director of the Center of Innovation, Deacon Stone, demonstrate a STEM exercise that students can complete at home with household materials.

This is a project that can be done with minimal household supplies. All you need is a marble, paper, tape, scissors, and a ruler.

It can be adjusted for any age level and modified depending on skill level.

  • Beginners start with basic household supplies
  • Emerging makers can play with different materials to construct the track. For example, the supports could be 3D printed using a stand-alone machine or 3D printing pens.
  • Advanced makers could completely customize their track and take it a step further by adding lights, sensors, or other electrical components to amp up the fun!
