Wheeling Park High School’s VEX Robotics team was crowned state champion Dec. 16 during the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission (SSAC) Robotics Championship hosted at Marshall University. The Ohio County team also took home the Programming Award.
The event took place at the Marshall University Memorial Student Center and was presented by the Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC), the Marshall University VEX Robotics Club and the West Virginia Robotics Alliance.
John Marshall High School of Marshall County earned second-place honors as well as the Robotics Skills and Design awards. St. Joseph Central Catholic High School of Cabell County took third-place honors and won the robot Build Award. Capitol High School of Kanawha County captured the Innovate Award.
High School teams from across the state competed in a head-to-head game called V5RC Push Back. During autonomous and driver-controlled rounds, teams guided their robots through a series of maneuvers: moving blocks into goals, controlling zones within goals, clearing loads and parking their VEX robots in defined zones on the 12 ft. x 12 ft. playing field before time ran out.
Since 2014, MAMC has presented robotics workshops and tournaments in Huntington for students of all age levels, including FIRST Lego League, VEX-IQ and VEX Robotics events.
