A familiar name for more than 60 years across the Huntington Tri-State region has achieved another milestone for itself by earning ISO 9001 certification with assistance from Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC).
The ISO registration for Wilson Welding Co. Inc., which has served the specialty steel and fabrication industry with services from builds and rebuilds to repairs of engineered infrastructure of steel and alloys, means the family-owned-and-operated company has qualified welders and procedures to meet AWS (American Welding Society) standards in addition to robust quality management system processes.
Derek Scarbro, MAMC Director, said he recognizes the company’s customer-focused commitment and is especially proud to point out that the company successfully made it through the audit with zero findings, which resulted in its immediate recommendation for certification.
“Wilson Welding’s quality system and staff are well aligned, well developed and disciplined – so new doors and markets are opened to this local business,” Scarbro said.
Jerry Straub, President of Wilson Welding, attributes the quality registration not only to his successful company’s management approach but gives credit to MAMC’s patient, understanding and expert staff. “We received our [ISO] certificate in a timely manner … and MAMC made this possible. This was a completely unfamiliar area for me and our company.
“Erica [Cheetham, Director of Quality Services, and her former-MAMC colleague Loria Martin] showed amazing patience and understanding to help me understand what we were trying to accomplish and how our current plans would integrate with ISO,” Straub said.
Cheetham explained that while ISO 9001: 2015 certification is important for securing certain contracts and conducting business with many government agencies and primes, achieving the ISO standard also boosts efficiency, reduces time and waste, improves safety and reflects a company’s ability to consistently produce quality goods and services. ISO 9001: 2015 is “the gold standard for quality, one that is recognized worldwide,” Cheetham said.
Scarbro complimented Cheetham’s chosen full-team approach. “By adding the expertise of our industry-certified welding instructors and trainers to our project led by Erica, as Director of Quality services, we have ensured the registration of yet another West Virginia company,” Scarbro said.
